Alumni Letters

Dear College Bound,

It is with humble gratitude that I write this letter of appreciation for your generous scholarship to my daughter Markia Jackson for four years. As I prepare for travel to witness her graduate from North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina with magna cum laude honors, I am so grateful for all the help and support we received along the way from others. It truly took a village and I am so grateful.

I have also included a copy of her Philosophy of Education as well as project that was sent with her graduation announcement to encourage others to encourage youth. The last paragraph in her Philosophy of Education reads:

“Being a teacher means that you not only have a commitment to the student, but also to their family and even the community. Sometime children from low income neighborhoods feel neglected by everyone, by their family, the community, their school, and so on. By working in areas with children that come from poverty, I can hopefully make a difference in some of their lives. I can encourage children to stay in school and strive for higher education, even if they never find that kind of encouragement in their homes. If I can work to save at least one child’s life, then my job will be fulfilled as a teacher. “

I cried as I read this and knew that she understood what President Obama meant when he said:

“Focusing you life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. Because it’s only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential.”

I thank you for investing in my child and giving her the opportunity to become a caring, responsible adult. I have enclosed a brand new $2.00 bill to pass on. In addition to encouraging the child about hard work, it will also give an opportunity to have a short discussion on the value of money.

Scholarships

The College Bound Scholarship

The College Bound Scholarship Program is designed to financially assist qualified applicants in obtaining degrees from accredited academic institutions of higher learning. Each spring eligible students may apply for an award up to $6,000 to be used towards direct cost (tuition, room board) and indirect cost ( personal expenses, books and transportation) for higher education.

Scholarship selection is based on a combination of academic performance, community service, extracurricular activities, financial need and a commitment to College Bound.

College Bound students are eligible to apply for the College Bound scholarship if:

They are currently in the 11th or 12th grade
They have actively and consistently participated in the Academic Mentoring Program for at least one academic school year

Completed scholarship applications are due by March 18, 2013.

Scholarship Recipients

If you received a College Bound scholarship, here is some information that may be helpful for you:

Students may request scholarship funds on the following schedule:
- Fall: August 1st - September 15th
- Spring: January 1st - February 15th
Students must use all scholarship funds within 6 years of high school graduation.
Students must enroll in college within one year of high school graduation.
You must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA to maintain your scholarship.
- Students who fall below a 2.0 GPA will have one semester to show academic improvement.

To request your scholarship disbursement, submit the following:

Scholarship Payment Request Form
An Official transcript or report card. Your cumulative GPA and most recently completed semester's GPA must be shown.

The Justin Carl Holman Memorial Award

This $1,000 scholarship honors the memory of College Bound student and environmental activist Justin Carl Holman. It preserves his legacy of conservation and environmental justice by recognizing a current College Bound senior who shares his passion for the environment.

College Bound students are eligible for this scholarship if:

They are a graduating high school senior

They have participated in the Academic Mentoring Program for at least one year

A commitment to the environment through academic studies and/or community service OR An intention to study environmental science, environmental politics or a related field in college

Application deadline is March 18,2013.

The JCH application period is now closed. Submissions sent via email or fax after the March 18, 2013 6:00 pm est deadline will not be accepted.

Juliette Tyler Lewis Civic Award

This $1000 scholarship is available for current college students who participated as seniors in the College Bound Academic Mentoring Program. To qualify for the JTL Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

• Graduated high school while participating in the College Bound Academic Mentoring Program.
• Currently enrolled in college or graduate/professional school.
• Have a current cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
• Have a commitment to community service/volunteerism.

Application deadline is March 18,2013.
